Going to university is a big commitment, and you have plenty of decisions to make. You need to do your research, and start early!

The UCAS website is a good place to start. Take the Stamford Test to give you ideas of which courses may suit you, search for courses, and even apply online. Universities have their own websites, and prospectuses which outline the courses they offer.

UCAS

The UCAS website is a great place to start your university research. You can search courses, make your application and track your progress all at the click of a button, and if you're really stuck with what subject to study the Stamford Test can give you an idea of what courses would suit you best.

The UCAS website also has a great tool called yougofurther.co.uk, a student only networking site which lets you meet people doing your course or going to your university of choice before you leave.

A great way to ease all those first day nerves!

HE Conventions

HE Conventions are large events where up to 150 universities get together in one place to provide support, guidance and information on the courses they offer and facilities they have available to prospective students.

HE conventions will be really busy with lots going on so it's important to plan your day in advance.

HE Convention Do's and Don'ts:

DO:
- Attend a talk on your chosen subject area
- Ask about Open Day dates

DONT:
- Be distracted by freebies
- Take too many prospectuses - they are heavy and you can always request these directly from universities or from their website

Open Days

You've looked on the web, you've read the prospectus, you've met staff at the convention and you like what you see. It's time to pay them a visit!

Open Days are events where universities open their doors to prospective students - you can take a tour of campus, look at halls and attend subject sessions. Most importantly you can chat to current students and see how they're finding it!

Applicant visit days

Applicant Visit Days give you the opportunity to visit institutions once you have applied to study there.

They are different to Open Days because they are designed to give you more in-depth information on your chosen subject area and academic School or Faculty.

At an AVD, you will certainly have the opportunity to spend time with lecturers in your chosen subject area, as well as meeting students already studying your course.

Your chosen university will notify you if they are holding AVDs once you have made your application.
